Choriza May Accuses Uber Driver of Discriminating Against Her in Drag
This is just not okay.
On Monday, September 18,
RuPaul’s Drag Race UK
season three star Choriza May took to X (formerly Twitter) to report that an Uber driver drove off from her after seeing that she was in drag. This incident took place during one of the last days of
London Fashion Week
, which ended on Tuesday, September 19.
May wrote in a post:
“Just a bit of homophobia to finish off Fashion Week. This Uber driver just [saw] me in drag and canceled the trip right in front of my face then drove off. Just lovely.”
The official X profile for Uber Support responded a day later to May’s original tweet:
“This behavior is not okay and Uber has a zero-tolerance approach to any type of discrimination. Any driver found to have behaved in this manner will be removed from the Uber platform. Please DM us your account details, so we can investigate.”
“The Uber arrived… I go out and wave at him with my suitcases and full make-up. It was clear that the Uber was for us,” May told
. “I’m just waiting and I see him move forward. I look at my screen and the Uber app was finding me another driver, because he had canceled the trip.”
Drag Race UK
star also told the publication that this has happened to her before with taxi cars, and that it has also “happened to many drag queens.”
She added, “It leaves you in a vulnerable position where you wait for the next Uber. It leaves you in a very vulnerable position that means you might suffer more homophobia, because you’re in drag on the street.”
We hope this gets sorted out between
and Uber, and that new policies are put in place to avoid future situations like these.
