NBA and parenting legend Dwyane Wade once again showed how to be a good father of a trans child, calling out anti-trans bills on social media.
Wade, whose daughter Zaya is trans, posted clips from a video of another father of a trans daughter giving an impassioned speech in front of the Missouri House of Representatives about his own trans daughter. In the video, Brandon Boulware is testifying on HJR 53, an anti-trans bill that would ban trans girls from competing in girls sports.
"I vote AGAINST this legislation! I don't know Brandon Boulware at all but I do know we have something real in common," Wade wrote in his post. "Here's the one thing we can't do ' SILENCE OUR CHILD'S SPIRIT' Thank you for using your platform and sharing your family's story! 'Our kids are more than bedrooms, bathrooms and locker rooms.'"
Boulware gave a speech that's now gone viral, explaining how he used to not understand trans people and tried to dissuade his trans daughter from being a girl. He cut her hair short, made her dress in boys clothes and play boys sports.
Then one day when she was playing in one of her sister's dresses she asked if she could go across the street to play with a neighbor. Boulware said no. His daughter then asked if she changed into boy clothes would she be allowed to go play.
"It was then that it hit me, that my daughter was equating being good with being someone else," he says in the video. "I was teaching her to deny who she is. As a parent, the one thing we cannot do, the one thing, is silence our child's spirit." The ACLU shared the testimony online and it has since gone viral.
Wade, and his wife, Gabrielle Union, have consistently shown what it means to be loving and supportive parents of a trans child. They have done so publicly and loudly, showign a roadmap for how other parents can behavior.
Wade also made regular public statements declaring his love for Zaya. "Unconditional love, simply put, is love without strings attached. It's love you offer freely," he wrote in one Instagram post supporting his daughter. "You simply love them and want nothing more than their happiness."
In a time when a record number of anti-trans bills are being introduced across the country, we need more stories of positive, loving, and affirming parents of trans children.
