'Illustrated Man' by Sophy Holland
Photographer and Director Sophy Holland has been capturing the rise of the tattooed male pin-up, which she's now chronicled in a new large-scale series, called Illustrated Man.
Featuring portraits of notable cultural figures, from fashion director Nick Wooster to Rick "Zombie Boy" Genest and musician Dave Navarro, Holland's black-and-white portfolio celebrates the ascension of tattoos in mainstream pop culture.
Having once been largely viewed as subversive and stereotypical, tattoos are being reimagined today as a more intimate, self-reflective art form--just as diverse as the individuals baring such illustrations.
Illustrated Man opens this Thursday, May 4 at Agora Gallery, 530 West 25th Street, from 7:30 to 11 PM. Wooster himself is scheduled to host Holland's one-night-only exhibition. To request attendance, RSVP at illustratedman@maopr.com.
