Welcome back to the Out Newsletter!

I hope you all had a great Trans Day of Visibility yesterday! This is my 11th Trans Day of Visibility since I came out as a trans woman, and my tenth since I was working as a journalist specializing in LGBTQ+ issues. While I’ve spent the last decade learning and reporting on and writing about the topic of trans visibility, I really don’t know how to feel about the day itself.

On one hand it was hilarious seeing conservatives get in a tizzy because Easter happened to fall on TDoV this year. It was also a reminder that in many ways, transphobia has gotten louder and worse in the ten years since I came out.

It’s strange knowing that I’m more frightened of visiting my home state of Idaho right now than I was when I first came out. Those early days of going in public in girl mode before I was even on hormones were terrifying, but now, the hate for trans people has become so much more tangible. It’s like transphobes are actively on the search for trans people to attack.

Still, I can’t help but feel hopeful. This rise in anti-trans hate seems so much like the last, desperate swipes of a cornered animal that knows it’s about to die. And as younger generations are getting queerer and queerer, I can’t help but have faith.

I hope your TDoV was at least peaceful.

Now, onto the news.

What We're Watching

Who’s watching the new season of Top Chef? I’m having a great time seeing what dishes the chefs can come up with and I’m really loving the new host Kristen Kish! I’ve been a fan of hers since she first appeared on the show and she’s doing a tremendous job!

As for what else I’ve been watching recently? Does watching Beyoncé lyric videos count? My whole weekend was spent listening to Cowboy Carter, and specifically “II Most Wanted” and “Ya Ya” over and over again.

Author's Note

I’ve been writing the Out Newsletter for a couple weeks now and want to thank you for being patient as I iron out the wrinkles and figure out how to make this newsletter the best it can be. A newsletter is a new thing for me, but I’m having a really good time making the Out Newsletter into my special project, and I hope you’re enjoying reading it.

I’m always open to feedback, so if you want to email me at mey@out.com with tips and advice for the newsletter, I’m all ears!

Thank you so much for going on this journey with me.
