Trans Pop Star Nomi Ruiz Drops New Track, 'The Light'

Nomi Ruiz new music

Nomi pays tribute to the late producer J Dilla on her new mixtape

Since her pop debut as one of the lead vocalists of Hercules and Love Affair (alongside trans singer Anohni), Brooklyn songbird Nomi Ruiz has been on the forefront of New York's indie music and fashion scene with many projects, including a sultry fashion film for Mugler and a string of albums with her band Jessica 6.

Although she hasn't reached mainstream success yet (we think that's overdue!), Nomi keeps on creating, and her velvety voice shines as she introduces new soulful beats in her latest mixtape, Borough Gypsy 2: Nomi vs. Dilla.

The album is a tribute to producer J Dilla (a.k.a. James Dewitt Yancey), who wrote for the likes of Erykah Badu, Common, and The Roots:

"It's not only a tribute to the late great composer James Dewitt Yancey, but also a thank you note to someone who has saved me and so many others with his work, bringing even more meaning to the infamous shirt with its unmistakable message--J Dilla changed my life," Nomi told The Source.

Following her noted cover of George Michael's "A Different Corner" last year, Nomi continues to explore more down-tempo R'n'B and neo-soul beats with second single "The Light."

Nomi looks stunning in the video, flaunting red lipstick and a new shaved 'do. We can't wait to listen to the full mixtape, due out by the end of June.
