When Jennicet Gutiérrez interrupted Barack Obama during a White House reception, urging him to stop the detention and deportation of LGBT immigrants, the trans Latina activist may have been silenced — but people took notice.  An organizer of Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement, Gutiérrez has realized the need to speak up for those without a voice. “The injustice that we’re facing — the violence — I had to make this issue public,” she says. “At first the response was negative, but it raised visibility. It started a debate.”
