Out100: Jennicet Gutiérrez

Trans Activist

Photography by Ryan Pfluger in Los Angeles on September 28, 2015. Dallin James at The Wall Group.

When Jennicet Gutierrez interrupted Barack Obama during a White House reception, urging him to stop the detention and deportation of LGBT immigrants, the trans Latina activist may have been silenced -- but people took notice. An organizer of Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement, Gutierrez has realized the need to speak up for those without a voice. "The injustice that we're facing -- the violence -- I had to make this issue public," she says. "At first the response was negative, but it raised visibility. It started a debate."
