FUND THIS: Documentary about Ugandan LGBT Asylum-Seekers

When the Ugandan anti-homosexuality bill was signed into law by President Yoweri Museveni, the consequence for homosexuality was death. After a global uproar and threats to remove development aid from the country, the punishment was slightly lessened to life in prison. Though the bill has yet to become law, LGBT Ugandans still face heinous persecution if they are outed.

Filmmaker Kamoga Hassan is raising funds to create a documentary about people who experience this type of persecution in their home countries, and where they turn for safety when their own people turn their backs on them. Still in its early preliminary stages, Hassan needs to secure equipment before he can begin production. After the nature of his project was discovered, Hassan was given notice at his studio and can no longer work there.

This isn't the first time that Hassan has been thwarted in some way by the nature of his work. His film festival hit, Outed, lost its entire initial cast because the themes were too controversial. Outed is based on the true story of someone who was condemned as gay by a Ugandan newspaper and had his life upheaved over the span of a day.

The project has already raised more than half of its modest $2163 goal and still has 12 days left to meet its total. Watch the Kickstarter video below and donate here.
