Britney Spears is universally praised for her incredible stage shows, undeniable pop hits and legendary dance moves. But her singing voice--that sharp, nasally, mystifying voice--is rarely recognized as what makes the performer a true icon. This is in part due to her live lip-synching, but also because the artist's raw vocals are heavily reworked in post-production, as is with most pop artists' vocals in studio.
A newly leaked demo of Spears' Grammy-winning single, "Toxic" off her 2003 album, In The Zone, offers a reminder of that criminally unsung instrument. Where the track's final edit was highly produced, with Spears' whispery, auto-tuned voice dancing above searing strings and a frenetic beat, the unedited version showcases her original, organic vocals.
Listen, below, as Spears unloads candid growls and riffs galore.
