The Shape of Water Trailer Tells the Story of a Dark, Captive Merman in the '60s

"When he looks at me, he doesn't know how I am incomplete."

The first trailer for Guillermo Del Toro's aquatic man drama, The Shape of Water, which follows his last feature, the unsung beautiful horror film Crimson Peak.

The Shape of Water, which Del Toro wrote and directed, tells the story of a mute janitor, played by Sally Hawkins, who befriends a strange aquatic man (Doug Jones) in the lab she works at. The year is 1963. And most importantly, Hawkins is joined by her colleague, Octavia Spencer, in communicating with the merman of sorts.

"When he looks at me, he doesn't know how I am incomplete," Hawkins character explains through sign language in the trailer. "He sees me as I am."

Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Nick Searcy round out the cast.

The film will come out December 8 with Fox Searchlight--perfect timing for awards season. Take a look at the trailer, below:
