Actor, director, TV writer, and reality super fan Mike White changed the game with season 1 of his darkly comedic destination series, The White Lotus, in 2021. Viewers of all breeds and creeds were confronted with the fact that they had more in common with the privileged tourists of a fictional luxury resort than with its beleaguered staff, while still getting plenty of laughs. And the engrossing murder at the center of the season turned the show into a pop culture sensation, with people hosting watch parties and analyzing each episode’s plot points in a way that’s rarely been seen in recent TV history.

Since then, lovers of prestige television and pop-culture fanatics alike have ferociously awaited details for each new installment of the HBO hit series; each season centers around fresh drama of a fictionalized Four Seasons hotel in a different exotic locale. Fans speculate on how the latest chapter will paint a new, biting portrayal of Western society and the upper crust — and who won’t make it out alive.

From the where, when, and why, to which actors White has tapped to deliver more hard truths with expertly timed humor, here’s everything we know so far about the characteristically secretive season 4 of The White Lotus.

Was there always going to be a 'White Lotus' season 4?

After a new season of The White Lotus comes to a close — and White finally reveals who got the axe this time — the inevitable, first question on viewers’ minds is, “Will there be more?” But this time, they didn’t have to wait too long. In January 2025, a few weeks before the premiere of season 3, which tackled topics from incest to spiritual tourism in Thailand, HBO confirmed that The White Lotus would indeed return for a fourth chapter. As usual, the announcement contained few actual details about the new season, but at the very least, fans didn’t have to wonder if they’d have to bid farewell to White’s surprisingly fresh, small-screen spin on the whodunnit.

What stunning corner of the world a White Lotus season will take place is perhaps the most important — and revealing — detail there is to know.

Season 1 went to Hawaii to dive into colonialism, cultural appropriation, and privilege; season 2 traveled to the rocky coast of Sicily to ruminate on desire, legacy, and sexual power dynamics; and season 3 journeyed to Thailand, where the search for enlightenment collided with one very wild full-moon party and complex family dynamics. For season 4, White has set his sights on France, and specifically the French Riviera, with the Château de La Messardière — a palace-turned-hotel in Saint-Tropez — serving as the primary filming location.

Filming for season 4 is expected to start in the next few months, which means that it will be awhile before the sun-drenched episodes actually air. Perhaps the French paparazzi will snap some photos to give viewers a sneak peek of the season, but they’ll certainly have to be stealthy, since White is famous for keeping his stars in exile while production is underway.

It seems there’s not an actor alive who doesn’t want to be cast in The White Lotus these days, thanks to White’s unique talent for bringing out the best in his stars. Past seasons of the show have launched careers, brought relatively forgotten actors back into the limelight, and underscored the brilliance of gay icons Jennifer Coolidge and Parker Posey. And it seems we can expect much of the same from season 4.

While past seasons have included an impressive ground of veteran cast members, the new French iteration boasts an unrivaled amount of star power. Stage and screen legends Sandra Bernhard and Helena Bonham Carter have both been confirmed for season 4, alongside French heartthrob Vincent Cassel and British jokester Steve Coogan. And bringing additional years of experience to set are comedian Kumail Nanjiani, frequent romantic lead and Mindy Project star Chris Messina, and New Girl and Veronica Mars regular Max Greenfield.

But season 4 will also showcase a diverse group of up-and-comers, as well as some actors who are overdue for good casting or a comeback. We’ve got especially high hopes for Ari Graynor, who was recently cast in Ryan Murphy’s The Beauty, and her Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story costar Charlie Hall, who also happens to be the son of Julia Louis-Dreyfus. But we’re also excited to see what White has in store for Aly & AJ lead AJ Michalka, Hunger Games actor Alexander Ludwig, and a group of lesser-known French stars.

Will Jennifer Coolidge be in season 4 of 'The White Lotus'?

Beware, this section contains spoilers for The White Lotus uninitiated.

Coolidge was arguably the best part of seasons 1 and 2 of The White Lotus, thanks to her acting skills, natural charm, and unmatched ability to poke fun at herself. In season 1, Coolidge’s Tanya McQuoid landed at the White Lotus’s Hawaiian location in a fluster, reeling from the loss of her mother but also desperate for a massage. Throughout the six episodes, she kept the hotel spa’s owner, Belinda (Insecure star Natasha Rothwell), busy with special requests, while striking up a romance with Bureau of Land Management employee Greg (Jon Gries). But season 2 was less of a holiday for the eccentric heiress, who arrived in Sicily unhappily married to Greg and primed to fall into the clutches of a group of “evil gays.” Tragically, Tanya didn’t make it out of the season alive — though White, who showed viewers why he nearly won Survivor his first time around, kept viewers guessing right up until the end.

In season 3, Posey’s lorazepam-addled, thick-accented Victoria took up the mantle of the oblivious but lovable series matriarch. So there’s reason to believe that season 4 will deliver a new spin of the character, though who exactly will play her is yet to be seen. Our wager is on Bonham Carter, who has played plenty of nightmarish women in the past, from the Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland to Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
