Editor's note: This article contains SPOILERS for episode 4 of The White Lotus season 3, titled "Hide or Seek."
After the slow build in the first three episodes, The White Lotus has finally hit its stride.
Episode four opens with a couple phone calls. Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan) calls her actor boyfriend Harrison, to no response, and Belinda (Natasha Rothwell) chats with her son, who just so happens to be named Zion. The name fits in nicely with the religious overtones of the season. Biblically, "Zion" represents a place of divine protection, unity, or salvation. But is that a big enough metaphor to keep Belinda alive...
Meanwhile, the Ratliff family is just as oblivious as ever. As usual, the siblings are at each other's throats about each other's sexuality. "Don't tell our brother into an agender, asexual, like you," Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger) snides at Piper (Sarah Catherine Hook).
Victoria (Parker Posey) has noticed that her stock of lorazepam, a sedative that treats anxiety and depression, is low – and not of her own accord. "Certain social situations make me anxious," she confesses, but the family brushes it off, and Timothy (Jason Isaacs) guiltily says nothing. But when he lifts his arms in frustration, he accidentally flashes his penis to Piper and Lochlan. Awkward. His kids squeal and run away as Saxon giggles.
The scene cuts to a shot of the three wise monkeys, confirming our previous speculation that the kids represent the Japanese symbol of "See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil." Western cultures consider it to be about turning a blind eye, but Buddhist traditions consider it a proverb about not allowing evil thoughts to occupy the mind. What could this be saying about the kids' feelings towards their dad?
Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood), on the other hand, is on edge. She hasn't had the best of luck in the last few episodes. "Things happen in threes," she says. "One, the robbery. Two, the snake show. This could be some Final Destination shit, like death is coming for me." She convinces Rick (Walton Goggins) to join her on Gary, err, Greg's (Jon Gries) daytime boat party, but he warns that he's taking off that evening for Bangkok.
On Greg's boat, Victoria is distrustful of the wealthy men parading around while Timothy mixes his wife's lorazepam with alcohol, a big no-no for the medication. Despite Victoria's repeated observations that the pills are disappearing, she refuses to see her husband as the potential culprit.
While high, Timothy chats with Greg. "I heard someone say that anyone who moves to Thailand is either looking for something or hiding from something," he says. Though Greg deflects the accusation, we know they'll both be hiding soon enough.
Saxon is dead-set on helping Lochlan (Sam Nivola) lose his virginity to one of the LBH wives. (LBH is episode one term for the Western men who come to Thailand to find wives, and stands for "Losers Back Home." Their wives are usually much younger, and the implication is they're not all that faithful because they didn't exactly marry for love.) While Saxon aggressively flirts, Lochlan performs magic tricks to earn their attention. And with Timothy swiping all of her medication, Victoria's suspicion and anxiety are sure to escalate in the coming episodes.
Back at the White Lotus, Jaclyn is crashing out. Getting ghosted by her man incites her to party with her besties Kate (Leslie Bibb) and Laurie (Carrie Coon), but every attempt fails spectacularly. First, Valentin (Arnas Fedaravicius) recommends what looks like a pool spot for retirees double their age. When the girls return to the hotel offended, Valentin then urges them to walk around town, where they wander straight through a water gun festival and get soaked by the local children. Finally, they meet Valentin out with two of his sketchy friends. Surely, this won't end well.
Despite Greg's denial of his identity and ex-wife, Belinda finally googles Tanya McQuoid (Jennifer Coolidge), and she's shocked to discover her untimely death that we witnessed firsthand in Season 2. One of the headlines reads, "Heiress Husband Wanted For Questioning." She then googles Greg Hunt and finds a photo of him, confirming his real name and that it's not Gary, like he said. His bio also reveals that he worked for the Bureau of Land Management at some point, which is a part of the U.S. Department of the Interior that works to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. Belinda is clearly gagged, but seems unsure of what to do next.
Once the boat party concludes, Rick reveals that he's going to Bangkok to confront Jim Hollinger (Scott Glenn), the White Lotus hotel manager and the man he believes is responsible for his father's murder before he was born. Chelsea pleads with him not to go, anxious that he'll want revenge and that something bad will happen, but he takes off anyway. She returns to the boat just in time for it to set sail for the Full Moon Party.
Saxon and Lochlan also decide to stay for the party, leaving Piper alone with her parents the same day she was planning on telling them she wanted to move to Thailand. She's hurt by Lochlan's decision, but deals with it in silence.
At dinner, Victoria has some thoughts about the people she met on the boat. "That was a convention for con men and tax cheats," she says, unaware of the con man sitting right next to her. "I wouldn't be surprised if a few of them were actual killers. You think men like that only exist in bad movies, turns out they're real."
She's quite right, little does she know.
Timothy decides this is the moment to get his phone back, and he steps outside to call his lawyer. He quickly learns that his partner in crime, Kenny Nguyen, is cooperating with the feds, the police are looking for him, he's on the hook for embezzlement and fraud, and that a plea of guilty and a few months in prison is the best case scenario for Timothy Ratliff. His family will lose everything. "They're gonna come after everything you have," his lawyer warns.
"I would rather die," Timothy freaks out, and while security guard Gaitok is busy telling his crush Mook how beautiful she is, he swipes the gun on his desk.
The episode concludes with Belinda and Greg sizing each other up, and we get a shot of Greg looking at photos of Belinda and her son on Instagram. Is he plotting something? Get a job! Stay away from her!
Even more strange, he's not on his own boat for the nighttime party that Chelsea, Saxon, and Lochlan have set sail on – without their cell phones we might add.
"Full moon baby," says Saxon. "Shit's about to get crazy."
