Over two decades after the original series ended, a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is nigh!
According to a new report from Deadline, Hulu is close to securing a pilot order that will reboot the beloved franchise. Described as "the next chapter in the Buffyverse," Sarah Michelle Gellar is set to star in the new series — reprising her iconic role as Buffy Summers.
Though Gellar spent decades resisting the idea of being in a reboot, she apparently reconsidered after her starring in a guest role on the Dexter: Original Sin spinoff.
"It’s funny, I always used to say no, because it's in its bubble and it's so perfect," Gellar told Deadline. "But watching Sex and the City and seeing Dexter, [I'm] realizing there are ways to do it. It definitely does get your mind thinking, 'Well, maybe!'"
Oscar winner and "lifelong Buffy fan" Chloé Zhao is set to direct the pilot, with Nora and Lilla Zuckerman writing. They are also producing the series alongside executive producers of the original show, such as Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and the one and only Dolly Parton.
The original creator of the series, Joss Whedon, is reportedly not involved in any way with the reboot.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer's legacy is still going strong, even after all these years! In Oct. 2024, Amber Benson told Out how she felt about the groundbreaking relationship between Willow and Tara on the show. The actress explained:
"This positive relationship goes into people's homes every week. You are changing people's perceptions of what it means to be queer. You are talking to people in other parts of the world, our crazy country especially, who are watching this show but have never met a queer couple in real life but love Tara and Willow. It totally changed how we saw things and we were like, yeah, doesn't matter what we do anymore. It's just that we exist in this moment and we are a hand to people who don't have that."
