Queer women of color dominated the Thanksgiving box office!
American families were all about queer women of color this past weekend as the two top movies in theaters were Moana 2, starring Auliʻi Cravalho and Wicked, starring Cynthia Erivo.
Moana 2, which stars queer Hawaiian actress Auliʻi Cravalho as the voice of the title character, made history as the biggest Thanksgiving weekend box office, earning a whopping $225 million over the five day weekend, and blowing the previous records out of the water!
Moana 2's $225 million is $100 million more than the previous record set by 2019's Frozen II ($125 million) and 2013's Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($109 million). It also eclipses the previous record for biggest five day debut, overtaking The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned $205.6 million in its opening five days.
But don't forget about Wicked.
The other big movie musical this Thanksgiving weekend, which stars Black queer actress Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, came in second in the box office and earned itself the third highest ever Thanksgiving box office weekend with $118.2 million over the five day weekend, bringing its domestic total to $263 million (a record for a Broadway adaptation, beating out the record held by Grease) and bringing its global total to $359 million.
