Here's the First, Dream-Like Trailer for Julio Torres' Problemista

The movie is Torres' feature film writing and directing debut.

Get ready to enter the surreal world of Julio Torres!

The first trailer for A24’s upcoming film written and directed by Julio Torres is here, and we can’t wait to explore the world of Problemista.

The official synopsis says that “Alejandro is an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador, struggling to bring his unusual ideas to life in New York City. As time on his work visa runs out, a job assisting an erratic art-world outcast becomes his only hope to stay in the country and realize his dream.”

“From writer/director Julio Torres comes a surreal adventure through the equally treacherous worlds of New York City and the U.S. Immigration system.”

Problemista also stars RZA, Isabella Rossellini, Larry Owens, Catalina Saavedra, and Greta Lee. It will be released in limited markets on August 4.

The trailer of course, has plenty of Torres’ signature whimsical and dream-like imagery and plenty of Swinton’s signature eccentricities. Torres and Swinton really are a perfect match!

Early in the trailer, Torres’ character is at an Immigration office where he’s told, “Okay look, you don’t have a while. You have a month to find someone to cosign your Visa and if you don’t, you have to leave the earth.”

Luckily, Alejandro has been “freelancing” for an eccentric and chaotic artist who’s about to make his life even more complicated. “Oh, El Salvador, ‘poo-poo-sas,’ and those nuns they killed in the 80s,” she says when Alejandro tells her where he’s from.

This movie looks like it has comedy, heart, and all the great visuals we could want.

We’ve been obsessed with Torres through his comedy special, work on SNL, and of course on the tragically short-lived comedy Los Espookys, and we have been dying to see what he’d do next. Now that we’ve seen the trailer for Problemista, we know the wait has been worth it.
