As the story goes, Coriolanus Snow – who eventually becomes President Snow in the original The Hunger Games trilogy of books – is struggling to keep his family’s finances and honor afloat. With the 10th Hunger Games taking place, Coriolanus is one of 24 Capitol students who are assigned to mentor different tributes. Coriolanus happens to be assigned the girl from district 12, Lucy Gray Baird, who reveals herself to be a fantastic and captivating singer.

And yet, in their relentless desire to survive in the world of Panem, there’s much more to the story between Coriolanus and Lucy. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a fascinating prequel that documents the rise of the man who becomes President Snow, Katniss’ ultimate archnemesis.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes opens November 17, 2023 in theaters.
