There is strength and power in being femme.
The exclusive debut of the US trailer for the British queer thriller Femme is here to knock your socks off.
Starring Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Jules, Femme follows a drag queen whose life is upended when he’s the victim of a violent homophobic attack after a show. Later, when he re-encounters his attacker, the deeply closeted Preston (George Mackay) this time in a gay sauna, Jules finds the perfect opportunity for revenge.
“Unrecognisable out of his wig and makeup, Jules infiltrates Preston’s life, and in doing so, discovers a power in a different kind of drag…”
The trailer starts with Jules getting ready for a drag show, where he absolutely slays, before going into a nearby shop and encountering a man who had been staring at him earlier. After being harassed, Jules is followed out of the shop and beaten savagely by the man.
From there, the movie dives deep into its twists and turns, showing Jules and Preston spending more time together, Jules searching for “closted guy exposed” on a gay porn site, the two men exchanging sexual and violent glances, and Jules’ seduction of Preston.
Femme is the debut feature from writers and directors Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping, who based it on their short film of the same name.
“The seed of Femme came from our desire to flip the classic hyper-masculinity of the Neo-noir thriller on its head. By putting a queer protagonist at the heart of our revenge story, we aimed to put our own stamp on a genre that we love but from which we have often felt excluded,” the directors said in a statement.
“However once we started work on the film, the idea began to evolve into something that felt much bigger in scope. We realized that a queer reframing of such a hetero-centric genre was the perfect way to explore – and explode – conventional ideas of sexuality, masculinity, patriarchy, and identity,” they continue. “Our conversations around these topics brought up a lot for us as gay men about things that terrify us and things that make us rage.”
Femme is releasing in US theaters on March 22.From our Sponsors
