I wanna watch this movie with somebody who loves me!
After a long time of excitement and hype, the first trailer for Sony's Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody is finally here.
Starring Master of None's Naomi Ackie as the legendary singer, the movie is described as "a no-holds-barred portrait of the complex and multifaceted woman behind The Voice."
The trailer opens with a young Whitney singing in a club where Clive Davis (played by Stanley Tucci!!!) is in the audience. Of course, he's immediately entranced. And the legend of Whitney Houston was born.
Among clips of Whitney singing throughout her career, the trailer also promises that we'll "discover the Whitney you never knew," so perhaps they will be exploring the years-long relationship that she felt she had to hide her entire life - her queer relationship with best friend and creative director Robyn Crawford.
While there were rumors about Whitney Houston and Robyn Crawford for years, the two weren't confirmed as a couple until years after the singer's death.
In the memoir she released in 2019, A Song For You, Crawford confirmed that they had a romantic and physical relationship, but said Houston ended the physical aspects when she was signed to a record deal with Clive Davis.
"We never talked labels, like lesbian or gay," Crawford recalled in her book. "We just lived our lives, and I hoped it could go on that way forever. From a young age, I loved beautiful people. Sometimes the beauty that captured me came in the form of a male, and sometimes it came in the form of a female; either way worked for me."
We do know that Crawford will for sure be in the movie, as she's being played by Black Lightning star Nafessa Williams. But how will their relationship be portrayed in the movie? That part we don't yet know.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody is slated to hit theaters on December 21. Watch the trailer below.
