The story captivated the internet in a Twitter thread once, now it's back on the big screen.
It's time for a road trip.
Back in 2015, a Twitter thread held social media users in suspense. In it, A'Ziah Wells, known as "Zola," etched out a 148-tweet tale about how she met a girl at Hooters and goes on the ride of her life involving sex trafficking, pimps, murders, and crazy boyfriends. It was stupefying with the likes of Missy Elliot, KeKe Palmer, Solange Knowles, and Ava Duvernay all tweeting about it among others. And now, it's been turned into a movie that's dropping this summer.
First premiered at Sundance last year, Zola stars Colman Domingo, Taylour Paige, Riley Keough, Nicholas Braun, and Ari'el Statchel in a project that's slated to capture the world's attention once again. It is co-written by Out100 2019 cover star Jeremy O. Harris and director Janicza Bravo. It also features a cameo by living legend, and 2019 Out100 honoree Ts Madison.
Released yesterday, the trailer has reportedly gotten almost 10 million views across Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube already.
It's one of many projects from Harris who made history with the number of Tony nominations he received for his Broadway debut, Slave Play. Harris is currently in a deal with HBO and for it he will adapt Brit Bennett's The Vanishing Half, is turning his Yale Drama Graduate Thesis into an untitled pilot, and will return to Euphoria as co-producer.
Zola will release in theaters on June 30.
