In a year when the ceremony is being marred by controversy, the Golden Globes have announced the nominees in its movie and TV categories, including first time nominee Michaela Jae Rodriguez.
Pose star Rodriguez scored her first-ever Golden Globe nomination for her role as Blanca Evangelista. Earlier this year she became the first out trans actor to be nominated for a Lead Acting Emmy award for the role. Rodriguez lost that award to Olivia Colman from The Crown. Here she'll be up against Uzo Aduba (In Treatment), Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show), Christine Baranski (The Good Fight), and Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid's Tale).
There are several other queer actors nominated for awards, including Kristen Stewart for her role as Princess Diana in Spencer, and Lady Gaga for her role as Patrizia Reggiani in The House of Gucci. Both actresses have been leading this year's Oscar discussions.
Other queer nominees include Billy Porter being nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Drama for his role as Pray Tell in the final season of Pose, and bisexual Hacks star Hannah Einbinder in the Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy. Out100 cover star Ariana DeBose also picked up a nomination for playing Anita in West Side Story in the Best Supporting Actress, Motion Picture category.
Pose is nominated for Best Television Series Drama. It was also nominated in the same category in 2019 for the debut season.
Out Spanish director Pedro Almodovar's film Parallel Mothers was also nominated for Best Picture, Foreign Language, and Flee, a movie about a gay man from Afghanistan who escapes his home country to Denmark as a refugee, is up for Best Motion Picture, Animated.
Last year, the Hollywood Foreign Press was heavily criticized for its lack of a single Black member and lack of diversity overall, as well as apparent misconduct. The controversy got so bad that NBC has decided not to air the awards this year.
The Globes are still hoping to pull off some kind of non-televised ceremony on January 9, but for most, the awards haven't recovered enough from their recent scandals to cause much excitement.
If you're still interested in the winners, you can find out January 9, when the HFPA announces the recipients of this year's Golden Globes.
