The fabulous and inspirational trailer for Everybody's Talking About Jamie, the new feature film based on the hit stage musical, has dropped and it's making us all want to follow our dreams and sashay across a stage.
The stage musical, which premiered in England in 2017, is based on the 2011 television documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16, and follows a brave 16 year old who overcomes bullies, an unsupportive father, and the odds to become the fabulous drag queen of his dreams. The film stars newcomer Max Harwood as the titular Jamie, and boy does he look ready to slay!
The film looks like it is full of incredible dance sequences, beautiful drag costumes, soaring dance songs, and heartfelt revelations. "You remember when we was little? We used to play dress up?" Jamie asks his best friend in the trailer, "well, to me, that's a game I don't want to stop playing." It's like an even gayer version of Billy Elliot.
In the trailer, we see Jamie struggling to find the confidence to be himself, in no small part because he's mocked for his dreams both at home and at school. "I'm done with this," his father tells him, "wanted a son so badly, but I got you." But Jamie's not alone, he's got his mom and best friend on his side. "You are the bravest person I know," his best friend tells him, "you're like Beyonce."
The film co stars Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe) as Jamie's teacher, and Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) as his drag queen mentor. For this film version, Everybody's Talking About Jamie brings back the team behind the orignial stage production, with director Jonathan Butterell, writer Tom MacRae, composer Dan Gillespie Sells, and choreographer Kate Prince all working on it.
Everybody's Talking About Jamie is set to come out of the closet and onto our screens on February 26, 2021.
