You know pretty much what to expect from a Whit Stillman film: smart, well spoken young people, either highly educated or in the process of being so, flitting about being sort of vapid but in a way that tells the viewer something about himself. Damsels isn't much different from Metropolitan, Barcelona, or The Last Days of Disco in that respect, however the film is a bit less bleak that some of the auteur's earlier work--and there's tap dancing. Also, Gerwig and her coven of pals are on a mission that plenty of us can relate to: "Take a guy who hasn't realized his full potential or doesn't even have much and then help him realize it or find more."
