George Clooney will join the West Coast premiere reading of Dustin Lance Black's 8, set to take place in March. The play looks at Perry v. Schwarzenegger, the case filed by the American Foundation for Equal Rights to overturn Proposition 8, which stripped gay men and lesbians in California of the right to marry. When Harry Met Sally director Rob Reiner, who is working on a documentary about Prop. 8, will direct.
"It is astonishing that gay and lesbian Americans are still treated as second-class citizens," Clooney said in a statement. "I am confident that, very soon, the laws of this nation will reflect the basic truth that gay and lesbian people--like all human beings--are born equal in dignity and rights."
8 had its New York premiere in September and raised over $1M for AFER thanks to the star power of participants including Ellen Barkin, Morgan Freeman, Cheyenne Jackson, John Lithgow, Christine Lahti and Larry Kramer.
