While some esoteric die-hard critics may abstain from considering fashion design or any iterations thereof as art, this summer might make them want to reconsider. From the tribute to Alexander McQueen's dark and poetic work now showing at The Metropolitan Museum to Canada's nod to the cultural contributions bestowed upon the masses by visionary Jean Paul Gaultier, fashion -- in its many forms -- is being hung on art gallery walls with more and more frequency.
But fashion affects culture in a variety of ways. Take, for example, the role that models play on society. From issues like body image to ethnic diversity, those Greek gods and goddesses whom designers send down their catwalks tell a subtle story, and one woman has tread more runways than most. If a picture is worth a thousand words, than there Encyclopedia Britannica's worth of poetry "written" about her. We're talking about none other than Kate Moss, who's childlike fragility first caught the world's attention in 1989, and set the tone for the "heroin-chic" look of the nineties. Since, she's had a million boyfriends, a daughter and a cocaine scandal, yet she's still the face of a multitude of big name campaigns and is considered possibly the world's reigning supermodel.
New York's Danziger Projects is dedicating two rooms to the face that captured the world's attention over two decades ago, and still enthralls us. With just eleven photographs from the biggest names in photography (think Annie Leibovitz, Mario Testino, Herb Ritts) we will see the muse through the lens of the men and women who have taught us to adore her lingering stare and cupie-doll lips. We're not sure why we're still enamored with Moss -- the silent face who can represent nerve-hitting vulnerability or ferocious womanliness -- all we know is that we do.
