Now, on to the treatment. First of all, I tried to ask Padilla for some pointers for the "perfect" brow, but he oh-so-cleverly demurred. But for good reason. He posited that there is no such thing as a standardized perfect brow, but the brow has to be matched to the face accurately, on a case-by-case basis. He also stressed the care they take to make sure that men's brow jobs don't look overly womanly or girly. "The emphasis is cleaning up the brow and opening up the face," Padilla reiterated.
So, after the tour, it was my turn to sit in the chair. I've never had my brows waxed, threaded or otherwise, and found it quite relaxing to just lay there for a few minutes in the middle of the day with my eyes closed. Its kind of like a little cat-nap. The actual threading doesn't hurt, but there is mild discomfort. Essentially there is a little pressure and the feeling of having multiple hairs plucked in a very short amount of time. That being said, it wasn't even enough pain to cause my eyes to water.
When I first saw myself, I thought that they had overdone my brows -- they seemed a little thin -- and I felt a little nervous about seeing people. I realized after, though, that the change was so subtle that no one could really put a finger on what was different about my face (I actually had a friend ask if I had gotten Botox). So, all in all, I think that the experience was a successful one, and for the first time ever I am seriously considering making this a more permanent part of my grooming routine (which is sporadic, at best, especially when it comes to my brows).
Prices: Range from $15 for a classic threading to thousands of dollars for certain long-lasting treatments. Most things fall in the $20-$40 range, though.
SPECIAL OFFER: If you mention Out at check-out, you'll get 50% off of any first-time thread/tweeze procedure through December 31st, 2010.
Also, if you tell us your most horrifying eyebrow story in the comments below, you'll be entered in a chance to win a free eyebrow threading and plucking. Just leave your comment by Thursday, December 9th at 11:59pm and we'll draw one winner at random from all the entries received. It's the perfect thing to freshen up your look for the holidays!
