To kick off the strangeness of it all, Erasure's Vince Clarke and Andy Bell released a stop-motion animation teaser with a sample of their version of "Silent Night" from their forthcoming Christmas album, Snow Globe, due out Nov. 11.
Now, for the first single released from the odd holiday collection--which include updates of classic carols and original Erasure songs--we get an equally weird and amazing video for "Gaudete."
A 16th-century religious choral work sung in Latin--"Gaudete!" translates as "Rejoice!" and the rest is about the excitement that "God has become man"--Bell says he wasn't familiar with the original, but grew up with Steeleye Span's version in the early '70s. For the video, they collaborated with Martin Meunier, famous for Tim Burton's James and the Giant Peach along with Coraline. So yeah, it's a definite creepy-cool vibe that goes along with the synth-pop beat.
