Mother has spoken!
Tina Fey needs no introduction as the legendary comedian has starred in a slew of iconic roles that have resonated with millions of gay fans including Mean Girls, Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock, and her latest hit series, The Four Seasons.
As season two drops on Netflix, Fey is thrilled that she joins a fabulous group of friends that truly embody chosen family as they continue to navigate all of the challenges that shocked fans at the end of season one.
Out's cover stars Colman Domingo and Marco Calvani represent queer husbands Danny and Claude who bring plenty of camp and undeniable gay shenanigans to the bunch. As head writer on Seasons, it was a priority for Fey to include a gay couple in the show’s ensemble cast.
"Being married is more than just your partner! It’s your partner and your lifelong friends. It takes a lot of people to feel fully seen and fully loved. I’m certainly a person who has so many gay friends and I always wanted to make sure we represented that on the show. That is my life in real life and it would be phony for it to be 3 straight couples only. I would never go on a vacation with just straight couples," Fey tells Out.
Although Fey is surrounded by close queer friends in her everyday life, the beloved actress is grateful that her passionate LGBTQ+ fanbase has supported her in all of her personal and professional endeavors since the beginning of her career.
"Thank you for your patronage! I hope to continue to do my best to represent as an ally. We will hold your hand through this and come on the other side. We’re going to make it, you guys. We’re going to make it!"
As anti-LGBTQ+ legislation continues to gain momentum in the United States, The Four Seasons cast is proud to represent the right side of history by showcasing unapologetic queer romance at a very divisive time.
"I’m very happy and proud! It’s just wonderful to be given this opportunity to play an openly gay man at this particular time in this country. I feel the pleasure of taking this risk. I’m deeply honored and excited," Calvani tells Out.
"Colman and Marco are not a stereotypical gay couple. They are real human beings with real issues that are same as you and I. They have the struggles we all have. Right now in the world, it is so vital for queer youth to turn on the television and see adults who are simply members of a friend group who happen to be gay," Kerri Kenney-Silver adds.
Beyond the gorgeous destinations and hilarious banter that makes The Four Seasons a hit show, the cast hopes the Netflix series can open minds as to what life and friendship can look like at any age.
"Especially right now with different view points on different things, it’s so wonderful and so necessary to create that chosen family. As you get older, it’s really about the friends you make along the way. I think people can relate to the characters in one way or another," Kenney-Silver says.
"This show really pushes boundaries of representation. Viewers who don’t belong to the LGBTQ+ community totally identity with our dilemmas and challenges. It means so much for us to know that the audience, who’s not gay, can see we’re not much different from one another," Calvani concludes.
