It was a beautiful birthday for Portia de Rossi and a beautiful day for her wife Ellen DeGeneres.
The happy couple, who have been married for fourteen years now, renewed their vows at Portia’s recent birthday party — and they’re sharing the love with fans.
“Portia surprised me at her birthday party by renewing our vows,” DeGeneres wrote in the caption for a video she posted on Instagram of the surprise vow renewal. “Thank you @KrisJenner for officiating and @BrandiCarlile for performing, and Portia for being the greatest gift to me, even on your birthday.”
In the video, which was also posted on YouTube in its entirety, Carlile was performing a lovely acoustic version of Roberta Flack’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” as Ellen and Portia walked into a room with friends and family.
The video shows Carlile singing as DeGeneres looks around the room filled with her friends with confusion. She starts smiling when de Rossi walks in the room wearing a wedding dress and holding a white flower.
The couple’s friend and neighbor Kris Jenner was also there, ready to officiate the renewal of vows.
“These two are couple goals, who continue to amaze me with how cute they are together,” Jenner said as the two held hands. “A match made in heaven, two peas in a pod. Their love and commitment to one another is amazing, and it makes me so happy that they have each other to love and cherish and grow old with.”
DeGeneres and de Rossi were first married on August 16, 2008 at their home in Beverly Hills. Now, 14 years later, they’ve renewed their vows.
“You don’t have to say anything at all,” de Rossi assured DeGeneres, “but when I was thinking about what would make my birthday really special apart from being with family and friends, it was reminding you that you’re the most important thing in the world to me in front of family and friends.”
“I was thinking about my life, my accomplishments, as you do when you have a big birthday,” she continued. “And it all just kept leading back to you. And I thought what greater accomplishment could I ever, ever, ever have in my life than being loved by someone who is so magnificent, by someone as incredible as you?”
“You cheer me up when I’m down, you make me feel seen, you make me feel safe, cherished, loved. I love you and I will always always love you. I am so honored to be your wife,” she said before the couple kissed to cheers from their family and friends.
