Hacks star Hannah Einbinder was arrested today by the NYPD alongside other LGBTQ+ celebrities for their role in a protest against the arrival of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the United Nations.
A video posted on social media by Mother Jones shows the openly bisexual actress being escorted away from the protest by the police with her hands cuffed behind her back. Photos and videos of the arrest quickly went viral on social media.
Einbinder was arrested because she was chanting "arrest Netanyahu" during a demonstration to support the Palestinian people, according to reporting from PIX11 News.
The protest drew several hundred people close to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, including Einbinder, and fellow queer celebrities like actress Susan Sarandon and comedian Caleb Hearon, who wore a "People Not Bombsā t-shirt. All three were zip-tied by the NYPD and escorted away from the protest.
Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker, Mary Beth Barone, Elliot Page, and Chelsea Manning were also reportedly among those celebrities risking arrest to protest against Netanyahu and his war in Gaza.
The protest began at 12 p.m., just two hours before Netanyahu addressed other world leaders at the U.N. The protestors sat in the intersection at First Avenue and 39th Street, effectively blocking traffic for over an hour.
Police told protesters to disperse at 12:30 p.m., but close to 100 stayed, including politicians like congressional candidates Darializa Avila Chevalier and Adam Hamawy, City Council Members Jennifer GutiƩrrez and Chi OssƩ, and New York State Rep. Emily Gallagher.
