Amanda Seyfried is busy with her next musical project, and out actress Evan Rachel Wood is joining her!
When Seyfried won a Golden Globe over the past weekend for playing Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout, she was unable to attend the ceremony. Presenters Mo Brings Plenty and Cole Hause announced that Seyfried wasn't in attendance because she was "deep in the process of creating a new musical."
And now we know exactly that that musical is Thelma & Louise!
Seyfried herself confirmed the news in an Instagram video where she accepted the Golden Globe, revealing that she is indeed in New York working on a musical.
"I had to miss it because I am doing something that is magic and it's musical. So I'm finally getting to do something that I've never really done," she said. "That's all I can really say about it. Hopefully more soon. But it's a lot of work. It's more fun, and it's been a great night."
Variety also reports that Weird star Evan Rachel Wood has joined Seyfried in the project.
The Thelma & Louise musical has actually been in the works for at least two years. In 2021, the film's screenwriter Callie Khouri was writing the book with Haley Feiffer, with indie singer/songwriter Neko Case crafting the score.
Thelma & Louise is a classic film that was nominated for six Oscars and won for Best Original Screenplay. The original movie starred Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon as two best friends who go on a road trip trying to avoid the police after shooting a man who was attacking them.
The two main characters are considered feminist and sapphic icons by many, and hopefully this musical will explore that part of their relationship further than the movie did. The sapphic energy will definitely be strong with bisexual icon Wood playing one half of the duo.
Both actors have experience in musicals. Seyfried has starred in film musicals like Les Miserables, Mamma Mia! and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Wood starred in the Beatles musical Across the Universe and voiced Anna and Elsa's mom in Frozen 2.
