Hello Out readers!

As Lesbian Visibility Week continues, I want to talk about some of my early lesbian pop culture crushes and heroes!

For Passover this week, I rewatched The Prince of Egypt and was reminded of the fascination I had with Tzipporah as a young girl. The movie came out when I was eleven, and I remember thinking I had never seen a more beautiful woman in my life. I understood what people were talking about when they talked about crushes.

I still think she's the most beautiful animated woman of all time.

Around the same time, I watched Aliens for the first time and saw Private Vasquez (played by Jenette Goldstein), a badass Latina with muscles and a butch haircut, and I saw a version of womanhood that I wanted so badly for myself.

Both of these women have stuck with me, and I return to those movies frequently. Neither character was actually gay, but I still saw myself in them. I'm thankful that now, young people can get the same feelings from characters who actually are queer themselves.

Who were some of your early pop culture crushes?

Woman Crush Wednesday

If you haven't met queer, Black, Latina singer Ludmilla already, get to know her now! The 28-year-old singer performed at Coachella and brought out her wife, Brunna Gonçalves, for an onstage kiss in the middle of a star-making set.

This Week in Out History

Happy two year anniversary to the day Supernatural star Misha Collins accidentally implied he was bisexual, making the entire internet think he was coming out. At a convention in New Jersey, Collins asked "By show of force: how many of you would consider yourself introverts? How many extroverts? And how many bisexuals? I'm all three."

Immediately after outlets started reporting the news, Collins issued an apology. "My clumsy intention was to wave off actually discussing my sexuality, but I badly fumbled that and understand that was seen as me coming out as bisexual," he said. 'This was not my intention so I need to correct the record: I am not bisexual. I happen to be straight, but I am also a fierce ally and the last thing I want to do is falsely co-opt the struggles of the LGBTQIA+ community."

Here are five other celebs who have done similar things and had to walk back claims of queerness.

Quote of the Week

"How you live your life is your business, just remember, our hearts and our bodies are given to us only once. And before you know it, your heart is worn out, and, as for your body, there comes a point when no one looks at it, much less wants to come near it. Right now, there’s sorrow, pain. Don’t kill it and with it the joy you’ve felt."

- In honor of Luca Guadagnino's Challengers coming out, I wanted to share this quote from Elio's father in Call Me By Your Name.
