They All Want Cake
Independent

Boston-based SpoilSport’s debut album, They All Want Cake, is a 43-minute blast of pop-punk that seems destined to be the indie “soundtrack to summer” for 2004. Sounding like a cross between the B-52’s and Pansy Division, the out foursome of bassist Marla Greenman, guitarists Suzanne Hinton and Craig Bostick, and Bostick's partner, drummer Jon Hetman, perform sunny, summery cuts with dark undertones and catchy melodies that will stick in your head for hours (just check out the sing-along choruses of “I Ride the Train” and “Come Over Come Over”). With crunching guitars and driving drums, this fast-and-furious album is poppy enough to be played alongside the best of contemporary modern rock, though its lack of sheen may work against it in these days of prepackaged pop. But if you’re looking for an old-school throwback, this is having your Cake and eating it too. Bryan Buss
