“He got down on both knees.”
Love wins, they say, and on Monday, Olympic diver and medalist Matthew Mitcham announced his engagement to his boyfriend Luke Rutherford.
"He got down on both knees, I said yes, and now we're engaged," Mitcham wrote in an Instagram. A reporter after our own hearts. Rutherford expanded on the moment on his own account.
"He said yes," he wrote. "I'm the luckiest man in the world." Other Olympians -- Mitcham won the gold for 10 meter diving in 2008 as the only openly gay Olympian competing at the events in Beijing -- congratulated the pair on their new announcement.
"Congratulations Luke & Matt," Amini Fonua wrote. "Miss your face on the pooldeck bb!" Olympian diver Maxim Bouchard also extended his congratulations while figure skater Adam Rippon applauded the news via emoji.
Rutherford and Mitcham are current living in London, where they moved to from Australia in March after a road trip from northern Queensland to Melbourne over five weeks. Just three weeks ago the pair celebrated dating for six months.
"I've been with this funny, passionate, energetic, caring, fun-loving, handsome man for six months," Mitcham wrote in May. "The longest six months of my life, but mostly because of how much we've crammed into them. Luke, thanks for being the Ricky Ricardo to my Lucy." The couple first began posting photos together in October and were together at the final Cairns Tropical Pride, but also spent the Christmas holidays with one another.
