First look at Levi's new gender neutral, Stonewall-themed collection
A long-standing ally to the LGBTQ community, Levi's pioneered many initiatives for equality. In 1982, it became the first company to offer benefits to same-sex couples, and it was also the only California business to file an amicus brief with the California Supreme Court to back same-sex marriage in 2007. As the fight for equal rights continues, Levi's once again decided to show its support with a new rainbow-friendly collection for Pride.
For inspiration, the design teams looked at the history of the gay rights movement and created a timeline that lists key moments in LGBTQ history, highlighting 1969's Stonewall riots as a pivotal catalyzer for change.
"Levi's has always celebrated one's authentic self expression," says Grant Barth, Levi's chief merchandising officer. "With the 2015 Pride collection, we wanted to continue building a voice within the community by honoring its history. When you think of the first fight for LGBTQ equality, you think Stonewall. The idea is to start with the most significant rallies for equality and continue honoring moments that have brought the community forward. "
The collection includes customizable pieces, such a collectible trucker jacket, emblazoned with pride related patches and buttons, and stone-washed shorts embroidered with a rainbow flag. All clothing is gender neutral and affordable, with prices ranging from $18 to $98. In addition, all net profits from sales will benefit the Stonewall Community Foundation.
The Levi's Pride Collection will be available throughout May and June on Levi.com, and at select Levi's stores in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Portland, San Francisco, Toronto, and Washington DC.
