As owners of The Bradford guesthouse in Provincetown, husbands Stephen Walker and PJ Wilson know a thing or two about providing hospitality to LGBTQ+ travelers. So when the couple had some downtime in spring before the height of their summer season, they sought out a vacation destination for themselves and their 2-year-old son, Theo, that could offer the same. So they went to Charleston.

For one week in April, the rainbow family explored South Carolina’s most populous city, where they discovered historic sites, fabulous dining, and indoor and outdoor adventures. Most importantly, they found a destination that welcomed them with open arms.

Ahead, Walker, who, in addition to operating a bed-and breakfast, works as a producer and anchor with Out, shares his experience.

Why did Charleston appeal to you as a destination?

We picked Charleston for a little getaway from our hectic hotel life in Provincetown. My husband had worked there as a young guy and always raved about it. With its charming Southern vibes, friendly locals, and tons of fun activities, it felt like the perfect place for some quality family time. And let’s be real — who can resist that sunshine and spring atmosphere?

How did you pack for your weeklong trip there?

Packing for our trip was all about Theo! We made sure to bring plenty of clothes, snacks, and his favorite toys to keep him entertained. We were super lucky that our hotel, The Nickel, coordinated with Charleston Baby’s Away to have a car seat, high chair, and beach toys ready for us in our room. This thoughtful arrangement made our travel so much easier and allowed us to focus on enjoying our time together.

What was your favorite family-friendly excursion?

The South Carolina Aquarium was a huge hit! Theo was completely captivated by all the colorful fish and sea creatures, and we had an absolute blast exploring the exhibits together. One of the highlights was feeding the stingrays, which was such a fun experience for all of us.

Favorite indoor activity?

The Children’s Museum was fantastic. With all the interactive exhibits, Theo was engaged, and we could have easily spent the whole day playing and exploring. We ended up going back a few times afterward because it was the perfect, easy, and safe spot for us to hang out together as a family.

Favorite outdoor adventure?

Charleston is packed with lovely parks. We spent so much time outside — Theo ran around, played to his heart’s content, and we soaked up the fresh air. We also loved exploring the markets, and the horse-and-carriage ride from Palmetto Carriage Works was such a blast! It felt like the perfect way to take in the sights while enjoying our family time together.

Favorite lunch order?

We absolutely loved our meals at Millers All Day. (PJ loved the Hot Honey Chicken B.E.C. so much he “forgot” to share it.) The cozy vibe and delicious food made it our go-to spot for lunch, and the most kid-friendly place we ate at.

Favorite dinner order?

Sorelle was an absolute treat for our date night. The elegant atmosphere made it feel extra special, and we couldn’t get enough of those incredible pillows of gold tortellini. It was such a lovely evening, just the two of us.

Favorite cocktail?

We indulged in some delightful craft cocktails at Sorelle — definitely a nice way to unwind and celebrate our time together. Try the signature drink, La Befana, which mixes fruit and herbal flavors with Processo. Additionally, the rooftop at The Nickel Hotel was surprisingly popular with the local LGBTQ+ crowd on Friday nights; it seems the locals love finding rooftops to take over in the best possible way!

Favorite queer location?

While Charleston doesn’t have a ton of queer bars, we found some cute spots that welcomed us with open arms. The community vibe was lovely! And of course, we did pop in for the drag queens on Sunday night at Dudley’s on Ann.

What did you learn about Charleston’s history that surprised you?

Visiting the International African American Museum was such an eye-opener. Learning about the rich and sometimes untold stories of African American history in Charleston really deepened our appreciation for the city and its culture.

What was your favorite memory you made there?

One of my favorite memories was at the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, where we explored the USS Yorktown and learned so much about history. Plus, I’ll never forget chatting with some local women who initially seemed like they might judge us but turned out to be super friendly. Their curiosity and kindness made us feel so welcomed, and they even invited us to spend Easter Sunday with them. It was such a heartwarming experience!

What advice would you have for other LGBTQ+ families who are first-time visitors?

I’d say, dive into the Southern hospitality. Take the time to engage with the locals; they’re fantastic! Charleston is a place that will embrace you, and you’ll find so many opportunities for fun and connection.
