Lena Waithe, who made history as the first black woman to win a TV writing Emmy for Master of None, is now writing and producing The Chi. The series, described as "a powerful coming-of-age drama series about an interconnected group of working-class African-Americans on Chicago's volatile south side," arrived on Showtime January 7.

Common will also serve as an executive producer, and the show will star Alex Hibbert, the young boy in Moonlight, as well as Straight Outta Compton's Jason Mitchell and Yolanda Ross from The Get Down.
Waithe's show was filmed and produced entirely in Chicago, and follows a group of strangers whose lives become intertwined by coincidence.
