Rugby and soccer players in Great Britain have teamed up with the LGBT group Stonewall to combat homophobia in sports by wearing rainbow shoelaces on the field. The initiative comes after a study found soccer fans to be the most likely sport fans to hear homophobic slurs at games.
Several major rugby and soccer leaugues, including Premiership Rugby, English Football League, and Rugby Football Union have joined the campaign.
"We know the majority of sports fans want a better, more inclusive game," Stonewall Chief Executive Ruth Hunt explained in a statement. "This campaign is about encouraging people to step up and say they will not stand for abuse, and the support of football and rugby clubs and associations is crucial because it gives people the confidence to do that."
