Sara Ramirez Makes Political Statement During Cyndi Lauper Duet

She made a statement about trans rights during the performance.

In a stunning duet with legendary musician Cyndi Lauper, bisexual activist and actress Sara Ramirez sang "True Colors" -- Lauper's classic 1986 ode to embracing authenticity. The performance took place on December 8 during "Cyndi Lauper and Friends: Home for the Holidays" at New York City's Beacon Theatre.

Near the end of the duet, Tony-winner Ramirez, best known for her portrayal of bisexual doctor Callie Torres on Grey's Anatomy and Kat Sandoval on Madam Secretary, raised a fist and turned around to reveal the words "Trans is Beautiful" on the back of her jumpsuit.

The concert benefitted the True Colors Fund, which Lauper launched in 2010 to help end homelessness among queer youth.

Sara Ramirez shared her experience of the event with OUT, "The experience of dueting with Cyndi on True Colors was a dream come true. The most vibrant parts for me were about the political context and timing of this collaboration. I reached out to my friend Kris Harring - a fierce & talented designer who happens to be LGBTQ and a WOC- to collaborate on my look and I chose to put a sharp focus on our Transgender community's right to exist in all of its beauty and complexity."

She continued, "Friends from all walks of life showed up, including the fabulous Imara Jones and the legendary Lorena Borjas. I happen to be cisgender, bi+ and queer identified. I am not trans. It's silly to have to remind folks of the following but one does not have to be trans to be an ally to, or a co-conspirator with, trans community. You just have to be a human with an open heart and an educated mind. My hope is more hearts will open, and more trans, bi+ and queer youth of color will see they are not alone. I see your true colors and that's why I love you."
