Many will remember "The King of Cling" thanks both to his iconic designs and Clueless.
Legendary fashion designer Azzedine Alaia has passed away at age 77. The designer's close friend Carla Sozzani confirmed to Women's Wear Daily that Alaia died of heart failure in Paris.
The Tunisian-born designer gained cult status in the 80s for his structured, exacting style. While never a household name, Alaia was immortalized in the popular consciousness thanks to Clueless, in which Cher tells a mugger she cannot get down on the ground because of her dress. "You don't understand, this is an Alaia."
WWD noted that Alaia gained international fame in the 80s thanks to his evening wear, "snug knits and sculpted leathers, and he was nicknamed The King of Cling because his clothes fit like a second skin."
