Need To Know: Singer-Songwriter Tom Aspaul

Tom Aspaul

He's written for Kylie and covered Brandy. Now, Tom Aspaul's star is rising on the R'n'B scene.

In the current wave of gloomy, minimalist R'n'B artists that dominate the new music scene, Tom Aspaul is a breath of fresh air. With his perfect James Dean 'do and an ear hoop a la George Michael, the London-based singer-songwriter has the unapologetic queerness and sex-appeal of an '90s pop star, and the bubbly, lovey-dovey songs to match.

After releasing three tracks under his name, the 28-year-old was profiled by The Guardian and i-D magazine as one of the top artists to watch, and signed publishing deals in the UK and in the US. Last year, Kylie Minogue picked up his song "Indiana", and covered it on her album Kiss Me Once (it was renamed "Feels So Good").

For his latest release, Aspaul went for something less expected: A cover of Brandy's 2002 hit "Full Moon", which he remixed with samples of Carly Simon's "Why", and his own baby-making hit, "Pioneer". Until his mixtape drops later this year, we recommend adding it ASAP to your "make out" playlist -- trust us, we tried, and they approved.

Listen to "New Moon" and "Pioneer" below, and go to Tom Aspaul's Soundcloud for more music.
