2017 Has Become the Deadliest Year On Record For Transgender People In the U.S.

The shooting death of 47-year-old Stephanie Montez marks the 24th murder of a transgender individual in the United States this year. That number makes 2017 the deadliest year on record in the country for trans people, and with two months left of the year and a callous White House, it's likely to get worse.

Montez's body was found by a roadside near Corpus Christi, Texas, with at least three gunshot wounds. An investigation into Montez's death has been launched, and police suspect homicide. "She just had a great outlook on life. She was very supportive of everyone," said Brittany Ramirez, a friend of Montez, to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. "I don't know why anybody would do this."

The death of Montez comes just weeks after transgender 17-year-old Ally Steinfeld was brutally mutilated, murdered, and set on fire. And, of course, Steinfeld's death followed the death of Scout Schultz, a 21-year-old non-binary, intersex student at Georgia Tech at the hands of campus police.

With Donald Trump removing protection from transgender students and attempting to place a ban on trans people serving in the military, the discrimination is bound to get worse as it trickles down.
