An Indiana Republican announced that a bill opposed by many transgender advocates won't come up for a vote, essentially killing the bill in committee.

Indiana Rep. Cindy Kirchhofer said that a bill that would prevent transgender people from changing their gender on their birth certificate will not come up for a vote in the state House Public Health Committee, of which she is the chair.

The bill's author, Rep. Bruce Borders, claims the bill was not directed at transgender rights but out of his "respect for accuracy in legal records."

State LGBT advocates opposed the bill and cheered at the news it would die in committee as Kirchhofer hopes to focus on other important public health issues.
