In "Lesbian Jesus" Hayley Kiyoko's new self-directed video "What I Need," Kiyoko and Kehlani run away together, first as childhood best friends but eventually becoming more after a series of events leads to their car breaking down. The video is a gayer version
Thelma & Louise,
culminating in a
hot kiss -- a much happier ending than driving a car off a cliff.
Kiyoko and Kehlani were two of the artists most vocally opposed to Rita Ora's "Girls." Kehlani called the lyrics "harmful" while Kiyoko said "does more harm than good for the
+ community...A song like ["Girls"] just fuels the male gaze while marginalizing the idea of women loving women." "What I Need" is a music video that doesn't play at queerness for the male gaze, but celebrates two women in love.
