Premiere: Pansy Boys' Melancholic, Lo-Fi 'Empty Pools' Video

Pansy Boys

The queer Canadian twins reflect on that tipping point between late-adolescence & adulthood.

Lifted off their stunning debut EP, In Days of Yore, Canadian twins Joel and Kyle Curry of Pansy Boys have released a music video for "Empty Pools." The rising queer duo recruited director Kiara Palmer for the melancholic, lo-fi visual, which was shot entirely on VHS to capture a sense of youthful boredom and unrest.

When the Curry twins were writing "Empty Pools," they both felt lonely--a sentiment that's reflected in the track's forlorn piano melody. "We were in Montreal at the time, finishing our last year of university and felt like we were wrapping up a chapter in our lives that perhaps we will never experience again," they said. "The video translates this anxious yet simple feeling, and is an ode to the past few years in which we had nowhere really to go and nothing that grand to do."

They shot all the footage during the "last breath of summertime," featuring candid shots of the two lazing about with their friends as a tribute to the last four years of their lives. The Montreal Pride Parade was also happening that same day, so "Empty Pools" splices in clips of marchers carrying rainbow "Born This Way" flags and a sign that reads, "We are the gay kids." These were statements that "struck a chord" with the Pansy Boys.

"I wanted to offer an authentic glimpse into their lives, and I also wanted people to watch it and feel a sense of nostalgia for memories that aren't their own," Palmer said. "It's that tipping point between late-adolescence and full blown adulthood where you have no real responsibilities, so you have to fill your time with something. As artists, this is very valuable. Instead of taking those times for granted, we're looking back and celebrating them."
