The R&B singer is set to release Joyride.
Tinashe may be alt-R&B's foremost enabler. Her songs glorify inebriation so well they give you a contact high.
Her 2014 breakout, "2 On," was a woozy ode to being both club-drunk and blissfully stoned, while "Party Favors," the pulsating lead track from her new sophomore album, Joyride, name-checks Blue Dream, a legendary strain of West Coast weed, among other grown-up goodies. That's not to suggest that the singer (full name: Tinashe Jorgenson Kachingwe) is herself in a 24-7 stupor. For one, the Kentucky-born 22-year-old L.A. transplant still lives at home with her parents. Also, she's too industrious, having spent a good chunk of this year opening for Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj.
The almighty divas may be rubbing off on her -- Joyride's hookier fare reveals a secret play for pop domination. Not on the dashboard, however: goopy balladry. "I just don't make dating a priority," Tinashe says coolly. "So the songs are not going to be about breakups." No matter -- her music's brazen come-ons and drug-fueled flings are more than enough to keep us under the influence.
