Jared Leto Will Star in A Standalone Joker Movie

The actor is aiming to reprise his Suicide Squad role.

Jared Leto will star in and executive produce an as-yet-untitled film about The Joker, Entertainment Weekly confirms.

Leto first appeared as the Batman-universe villain in 2016's messy film Suicide Squad, alongside Margot Robbie as his girlfriend-of-sorts, Harley Quinn.

The new spinoff does not yet have a writer or director attached to helm, and is set in the DC Comics universe which is also the home of movies like Suicide Squad, Justice League, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and more.

A separate film, taking place outside the DC Universe, telling the origin story of The Joker has also been rumored--this one with Joaquin Phoenix in talks to star. Variety reported earlier this year that director Todd Phillips as picked Phoenix as his top choice for a completely different film from the one Leto is producing.
