Slamdance Sneak Peek: Skanks

Slamdance Sneak Peek: Skanks

A documentary at Slamdance follows gays in drag doing original musical theater in religion and football-obsessed Alabama

Premiering this weekend at Slamdance in the documentary competition category is Skanks, and it's perhaps the least likely story out of Birmingham, Alabama. The film follows the cast and community around the original musical "Skanks in a One Horse Town" about three women (all played by gay men) who accidentally travel from Studio 54-era 1978 to 1878 in Deep Hole, Texas -- via a disco ball time machine.

In a town where macho football is a religion, and religion is no laughing matter, not all the cast members are keen to invite family members to see the performance. Skanks is directed by David McMahon and will have its World Premiere in Documentary Competition at the 2014 Slamdance Film Festival.
