In the late 1950s, with his star on the rise, Andy Warhol found himself "too swish" alongside major gay players like Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, and Jasper Johns. But by the time he opened his first one-man show at Los Angeles's Ferus Gallery in 1962, the pop culture icon had traded his pen-and-ink shoe drawings for Campbell's soup silk screens. He'd also butched up his look, almost always appearing in a black leather jacket, turtleneck, and jeans.
