Fans have been clamoring for more time with Cordelia Goode and her coven of witches since the third season of American Horror Story aired, and now their wish is finally being granted.
Creator Ryan Murphy has officially confirmed that season 13 will be a continuation of AHS: Coven, one of the most beloved seasons of the horror anthology series, but will also feature returning characters from other seasons of the show.
Plot details are being kept under wraps for now, but some of the main cast have been announced, and according to Murphy’s social media posts, filming on season 3 began on April 6.
So as the popular show’s 13th season gets underway, fans are wondering what they can expect to see from Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies.
Who will star in 'American Horror Story' season 13?
Sarah Paulson will be reprising her role as Cordelia Foxx, but according to Murphy that’s not the only role she will play. Throughout the new season, she is expected to play six or seven of her past roles, and other stars will be doing the same.
“Well, everybody thinks it’s a Coven season, and it’s not. It’s all the seasons,” Murphy told Entertainment Tonight.
Jessica Lange, a frequent AHS star who played Fiona Goode in Coven, had previously said she had no plans to return to the show, but surprised fans when it was announced that she would be starring in season 13. Now Murphy has said that she will be back playing not just Fiona Goode, but also Langdon from season 1 (Murder House) and season 8 (Apocalypse); Sister Jude from season 2 (Asylum); and Elsa Mars from season 4 (Freak Show).
Emma Roberts will also be back as Madison Montgomery and will be playing several other roles as well, and it’s been confirmed that Evan Peters will be playing five roles. Billie Lourd, Kathy Bates, and Angela Bassett will also portray multiple roles in the upcoming season, including Marie Laveau.
Francis Conroy’s iconic orange-haired witch Myrtle Snow has already died twice — she was burned at the stake in AHS: Coven and died again in AHS: Apocalypse — but she’s coming back for the new season. Leslie Grossman and Gabourey Sidibe, both of whom have appeared in multiple seasons of the show, will also return for the upcoming season, but it is unclear which characters they will play.
The iconic latex gimp suit-wearing Rubber Man will also appear, as will John Carroll Lynch as his creepy and memorable character Twisty the Clown.
Jamie Brewer is returning alongside trans actress Alex Consani, Tig Notaro, Avantika, Mena Suvari, Elle Chapman, Berto Colon, Mat Fraser, Seth Gabel, Orlando Jones, Paul Anthony Kelly, Madelaine Petsch, Fedor Steer, and Zach Villa.
The “Pope of Trash” John Waters will also be joining the cast in an undisclosed role.
What will 'American Horror Story' season 13 be about?
It’s unclear exactly what the plot of season 13 will be, but it is likely to focus mostly on following the characters we met in AHS: Coven, who reprised their roles in AHS: Apocalypse, though clearly plotlines and characters from other seasons may come up as well. We don't have a real synopsis yet, but we do have a simple one: “They all come together to defeat the ultimate evil."
When the witches turned up for a second time in season 8, we found out that Mallory (Lourde), a very powerful pupil at Robichaux Academy, was destined to surpass Cordelia as the next Supreme, so it’s possible the upcoming season will continue that plot line. Now that we know characters from other seasons of the show will also be returning, we may also get continuations of their stories as well.
When will the show premiere?
AHS: 13 will be changing things up. Instead of hour-long episodes, the upcoming season will be comprised of 13 half-hour episodes that are set to premiere on September 24 at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT on FX and Hulu and stream on Disney+ internationally. The show will premiere with three episodes dropping at once, week two will also feature three episodes, followed by two episode being released each of the following weeks until the finale episode on October 29.
Why are the gays so excited?
AHS: Coven was a fave among the gays because of the powerful women at the center of the story, the insane fashion and hairstyles (remember Frances Conroy's bright orange do?), and the campy (and delightfully bitchy) acting coming from Emma Roberts.
