This week is not only Asexual Awareness Week, but on Thursday we’re celebrating Intersex Awareness Day as well. Individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community who fall on the AroAce scale may not have strong romantic or sexual feelings for other people, and Intersex individuals are people who are born with any range of sex characteristics that might not fit typical binary notions about male and female bodies. The representation for these people in our community is sorely lacking, which is why awareness is so important. And the best way to spread that awareness is showing the world your support for the AroAce and Intersex communities during this week. AroAce & Intersex Books
Alice Oseman, the author of Heartstopper, created a book featuring an AroAce protagonist realizing and accepting their identity where most books wouldn't feature such representation. Loveless tells the story of Georgia, a girl who doesn't understand why she doesn't feel romantic toward anyone. Her story is not only one of acceptance but of love, because in this story, love and connection don't have to rely on romance and sex.
Speaking of Heartstopper, we love that Alice Oseman has included AroAce characters throughout her stories. In Heartstopper, one of Nick and Charlie's friends identifies that he is AroAce. We love Isaac's journey of finding his identity and we can't wait to see where his story goes next.
