Gay NFL cheerleader Jon Reyes is living his dream, and he won't let haters steal his cheer.
Romero, who is in his first season on the San Francisco 49ers Gold Rush cheer team, gave an interview with Outsports about how he joined, what it's been like to be supported as a gay cheerleader in the NFL, and his message to any haters out there.
As background, Reyes joined the squad after his friend and dance classmate, Jonathan Romero, retired from his job as a cheerleader for the 49ers (Romero was the first male cheerleader on the team). "Him retiring was some sort of encouragement that, now that he's retired, I think I can be the next person to do that," Reyes told Outsports.
Reyes, who was born in the Philippines and moved to the U.S. when he was 6, has been dancing since high school, but had never worked professionally as a cheerleader before landing his job in the NFL. He said that so far, he hasn't had any issues with players or personnel.
"I haven't had any weird experiences, and I think whenever I see a coach or I'm in the same room as them, there is an acknowledgement," he said. "There's always a 'thank you for having us, thank you for having me,' all of that kind of stuff, and it's very professional."
While the NFL has had male cheerleaders since Napoleon Jinnies joined the Los Angeles Rams cheer squad in 2019, some NFL fans freaked out earlier this year when they found out the Minnesota Vikings had male cheerleaders.
"Imagine you buy front row season football tickets and when you sit down there's some man girating [sic] right in front of you," Infowars host Owen Shroyer said on X at the time.
Reyes has no time for anyone who might hate him from the stands. "Guess what?" he said, "I'm on the field. So bye, gurl!"
